The Importance of Utilizing Counseling Services on College Campuses

College is a time of immense growth and change, but it can also be a period of increased stress and mental health challenges for many students. Having worked with hundreds of students across three continents, I find that a majority of students encounter a time when they need counseling during the college years. According to the American College Health Association, the prevalence of depression and anxiety among college students has been steadily rising in recent years, with nearly two-thirds of college students experiencing overwhelming anxiety and more than 40% feeling so depressed it is difficult to function.

In response to these concerning statistics, many colleges and universities have expanded their counseling services to provide students with the support they need. These services often offer individual counseling, group therapy, crisis intervention, and workshops on various mental health topics. Despite the availability of these resources, many students are hesitant to seek help due to stigma or lack of awareness. Many of these programs are free to the student and are a part of the university fees that every student pays. I want to take away any hesitation that students may have to seek help when they need it.

Why Students Should Use Counseling Services

  1. Stress Management: College can be a stressful time, with academic pressures, social challenges, and the transition to adulthood. Counseling services can help students develop coping strategies and stress management techniques to navigate these challenges.
  2. Mental Health Support: Counseling services provide a safe and confidential space for students to discuss their mental health concerns. Counselors can help students identify and address underlying issues contributing to their depression or anxiety.
  3. Academic Success: Mental health is closely linked to academic performance. Students who are struggling with mental health issues may find it difficult to concentrate, stay motivated, and perform well in their classes. Counseling services can help students manage their mental health and improve their academic success.
  4. Personal Growth: Counseling can be a valuable tool for personal growth and self-discovery. It can help students gain insight into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and make positive changes in their lives.
  5. Connection and Support: Counseling services provide students with a supportive environment where they can connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. Group therapy, in particular, can be a powerful tool for building connections and gaining perspective.

How to Access Counseling Services

Most colleges and universities offer counseling services free of charge or at a reduced cost to students. Students can typically access these services by scheduling an appointment through the counseling center’s website or by calling the center directly. Many counseling centers also offer walk-in hours for students in crisis.

Counseling services play a crucial role in supporting the mental health and well-being of college students. By raising awareness of these services and encouraging students to seek help when needed, we can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and ensure that all students have access to the support they need to thrive in college and beyond.
